In my classroom I have been using this form of education for
a number of years. I am a CTE Automotive instructor and we are not just your
schools dumping ground for thoughts students that do not want to do the pen to
paper work. In CTE we have to follow a national curriculum and auto has been
doing that since the mid 80’s. The reasoning for this is because we supply industry
with willing and able entry level workers. The curriculum and national certification that
auto follows is NATEF, which is the same curriculum being taught from high
school all the way through university. My high school students, right now, are
using and being taught automotive online at a college level curriculum. These
students are those students other instructors do not want in their classes and
in my class they are working on and at a university level. Why?
The reason my students are working at this level has to do
with the online programs that I use. It follows SAMR at each level and in each
area to the letter.

Computer technology is used to
perform the same task as was done before the use of computers.

Students print out worksheet,
finish it, pass it in. My students do, print out and hand in their
NATEF Task list for grading when they have done the task.

Augmentation
|
Computer Technology offers an
effective tool to perform common tasks.
|
Students take a quiz using a
Google Form in stead of using pencil and paper. My final exam is their online
program and I do not have to do the grading the program does that for me and
it shows the students their score before I see it.

Modification
|
This is the first step over the
line between enhancing the traditional goings-on of the classroom and
transforming the classroom. Common classroom tasks are being accomplished
through the use of computer technology.
|
Students are asked to write an
essay around the theme "And This I Believe...". An audio recording
of the essay is made along with an original musical soundtrack. The
recording will be played in front of an authentic audience such as parents,
or college admission. In my classroom it is work at your own
pace and redo a Modula if you did poorly on it and keep doing it till you
understand the system.

|
A classroom is asked to create a
documentary video answering an essential question related to important
concepts. Teams of students take on different subtopics and collaborate to
create one final product. Teams are expected to contact outside sources
for information. This level of curriculum was never taught at this high of a standard
till technology stepped in.

Hey Gerald, I'm not surprised as the auto industry appear to be leaders in the cutting edge use of many things, including education. As we prepare students for future careers, working in groups is clearly going to continue to be the norm, and it looks like your are moving students toward being able to do just that. I noticed that you allow students to work at their own pace, and wish that my students could have more of that option instead of the old hurry, hurry; keep up with the curriculum.
ReplyDeleteHello Regina. That is one of the things I do feel we as educators need to do is help student look at these other career options. I tell of of my classes that if I have three out of the thirty in class go into automotive repair I did a great job, but for the rest they are to take we they learned here and use it in whatever field they choose to go into.
DeleteYes, you will see CTE (aka vocational ed in earlier generations) at the forefront of these pedagogical changes. While they have standards they must meet in their curriculum, they are often not as crammed with factual standards that often force the core content to push, push, push... We could learn a lot from their practices, but the core areas are also working under different constraints.
ReplyDeleteHello Dr. Siko. I agree with some of what you have to say other then the perspective that most other educators have about these types of classes. We have very high standards for which we need to meet. My students must complete with 100% accuracy over 150 task, AKA standards, which are all written at industry level standards. They must also meet the 570 hours of class times which means three out of their six hours during the day, or in my class 1 hour one year and a block class the next. I look at these type of classes as a capstone class for which students enter into to use the knowledge learned in the core and use it in a real world situation. One of my statements I tell all of the students in these classes is this; Do you want your brakes done on your car at 99%? What happens that 1% of the time that they fail?
DeleteYes, you do have that "100%" guideline (like pilots and surgeons) to work toward complete mastery of a skill. My comment was more meant from the point that many of your standards are skill based, rather than cramming down minute details about the cell which most students in a biology class will never use past that course.
DeleteHello Mr. Lickey,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your response to the SAMR Model and love your teaching method especially where you allow your students to keep trying til they get it. I allowed my students to continue going over and over the material until it stuck in their brain and the light bulb went off. There is no need to take a student to the next step if they do not understand the steps the proceed it. Sometimes they get frustrated because they did not catch on as fast as some others but i assure them it is not a race but a learning process. My students that catch on quickly i take them to the next level so they can learn something as well.
Hello Andrea.
DeleteThank you for the complement and I like your thinking. Why should we move a student forward it they did not get what we just went over. All they are going to do is fall behind even more.
Mr. Lickey I think that your assignments are wonderful. You mentioned that your students are working at a higher level. Do you think that integrating technology makes students reach their learning goals easier?
ReplyDeleteHello Erika,
DeleteYes and No. I do think, and have been told by my students, that the technology helps them learn the theory better. But I know it helps me raise my game to a higher level as well because it helps me remember the different smaller point which I need to cover. Thus it raises the whole class as a whole.
I was not surprised that the auto industry has been ahead of the game by using technology and it was interesting to see examples of that in your samr model. The auto industry has used technology beautifully for many years and have encouraged and forced other companies and people in general to follow suit. I was however a little surprised that they have been doing it for so long, but that's great. Cars and technology are a perfect match, it's something that basically everyone will have to get involved in. I for one am looking forward to the day when I can get in my car and tell the car where to take me without having to do anything, lol
ReplyDeleteHello Tracie,
DeleteGet in your car and tell it where to go is going to be great. Just think about the time it will free up for us when we having to grade papers and are sitting in traffic. The thing about is this, they have it now. They just showed it off at the auto show this year. It is still in testing, but we should have it soon.
Jerry, it sounds as though your classroom is ahead of its time. I think it is wonderful how you are aboe to readily attribute each SAMR to your class. I have a question about the modification piece: You say that the students are to redo the module as many times as needed until they get it right. Do you instruct the students who are struggling at all? For example, if a student has tried the module 3 times and not received a proficient score do you step in and provide guidance?
ReplyDeleteYes and No. What I tell them first is to take a number of times by themselves to see if they can figure it out. Then if they cannot get it send me a message. The programs I use are set up that all they do is click the help button and they can email me. I have some students that do that allot, but for the most part they get it after 3 time.
